About this data

Where the data comes from

Every number on these five pages comes from the Open Meteo Historical Weather API, which is built on the ERA5 reanalysis dataset. It is the same source behind every capital's temperature, rain, sun and wind figures, so a number on one tool always means the same thing on another.

How often it updates

A nightly job adds the previous day's weather for every capital that is already live, and keeps filling in older history for capitals still catching up to their full 50 year record. A capital only gets its own page once that record is complete, so every page you can visit is already built on real, finished data.

Which capitals are included

194 national capitals and 51 US states, all with a complete 50 year weather record. The world has about 195 sovereign capitals, so this dataset covers all but one: Vatican City is the only country not included.

What is Capital Climate Atlas?

Capital Climate Atlas is one home for five weather and climate tools built by INZIU. Each tool looks at the same weather record for 194 national capitals and 51 US states from a different angle: current weather, 50 years of climate history, future projections, a climate change ranking, and the everyday effects of that change.

What data is it based on?

All five tools use the same daily weather data from the Open Meteo Historical Weather API, based on the ERA5 dataset. Most capitals have a full record going back to 1976, some go back to 1940. Nothing is estimated, every number comes from real recorded weather.

How often is the data updated?

A background job runs every night and adds the previous day's weather for every capital that is already live. New capitals are added automatically once their full 50 year history has finished loading.

What is the difference between Climate Transition and Climate Change Practical?

Climate Transition compares every capital against every other one and shows which cities are changing fastest. Climate Change Practical stays inside a single capital and shows twenty everyday effects of that change, like how much faster laundry dries outside or how much power a solar panel loses on the hottest afternoons.

Are these tools free to use?

Yes. All five tools and their data are free to use and do not need an account.
